Designed for the photographer, Grant Mathews, and his partner, fashion editor and artist, Judith Cook, this beach house is located about three hours south of Sydney. “Cheap, flexible and environmental” was the brief, and so it was.
With the capricious nature of large extended families, weather, and careers, this house required some tricky planning to deal with the unexpected.
It had to feel comfortable with either two or ten people at any time. It required spaces that could easily convert from studio to bedroom. It had to provide alternative places to relax and dine should the weather turn ugly (as it’s inclined to do on the coast). And, it required places that would accommodate ones mood, if you should feel expansive and gregarious, or contemplative and recluse.
